Ubiquiti Unifi Aggregating Switch ports

Ubiquiti makes switching hardware that is inexpensive and easy to manage. They also have a cloud service that makes switching and Wifi hardware manageable from anywhere connected to the internet.

Link Aggregation allows plugging multiple cables between devices and having them act as 1 cable; they are fault tolerant so if one cable/adapter fails the other keeps the link alive & they add their bandwidth together (Active-Active not Active-Passive).

Why can’t i just plug in multiple cables all willy-nilly? Without additional configuration, multiple cables will cause a switching loop, and a broadcast storm will grind your network to a halt. Spanning Tree (STP) was invented to prevent loops; aka to keep ignorant ppl from shooting themselves in the foot. STP causes the redundant cable to get disabled (Active-Passive) the link is fault tolerant but no additional bandwidth is added via the extra cable.

Unifi switches require the aggregate ports to be Sequential (physically near each other)

Devices, Ports, Edit the 1st port in your bundle, Profile Overrides, Aggregate, click up next to Aggregate ports, click Apply. Make sure you have the same settings on the switch on the other end of the Ag Link. Use the same Switch Port Profile (usually All to pass All VLANs over the link) Link Speed Auto usually works well, if it doesn’t this could be an indication that one of your cables needs replacing or they are different standards ie cat3 + cat6e don’t combine well in an Ag Link.
