Generic Troubleshooting:
-Make sure the windows firewall is OFF on the PC you are trying to get to, firewall setting on the local PC doesn’t matter. There are multiple firewall settings for Private and Public(Internet) networks. Only turn off the Private one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure the hosts file is empty. Hosts file lets the user manually set or override name to IP address resolution.
notepad c:\\windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts
all of the lines should start with a # which designates them as comments<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netbios\nName Resolution & Master Browser<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Windows default is to query DHCP for NetBios off\/on setting, default is Enabled if not set<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nto check type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ipconfig \/all<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nand look for this line<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NetBIOS over\nTcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NetBios\nuses broadcast to elect a Master Browser, it\nmaintains\na list of computers that you see when you open Network Neighborhood\nin Explorer. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If set off for all computers it doesn\u2019t work at all (obviously) so pick 1-2 wired (not Wifi) PCs to designate as masters per subnet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nMaster Browser is\nper workgroup and information is NOT shared across workgroups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requires\nfile sharing to be turned on for each computer participating<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requires\nWindows firewall to be off or exempt for\nfile sharing to work<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works\nintermittently if the Master Browser is off or busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prefers\nthe newest OS \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not\na smart election process, will happily give\nthe master browser role to a laptop, on wireless, that\noften sleeps\nto save battery power. \n(turn off for laptops)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How To Turn off:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set\n\u201cComputer Browser\u201d service to disabled \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OR<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The only reliable troubleshooting tool I have found is NetBScanner <\/a>by NirSoft<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\ncan scan a subnet or range of ip addresses and report each\nPC\u2019s\nworkgroup, and the Master Browser for the subnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domain\nmaster browser is a role usually on a Primary Domain Controller that\ndistributes NetBios\ninformation across subnets to the elected master browser of each\nsubnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wins\nresolution (NetBios\nis the protocol WINS uses for name resolution)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nOriginally designed to provide name resolution across subnets<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pre\nwindows 2003 Wins had its own database, but modern OS\u2019s use the DNS\ndatabase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Non-domain\nversion of Domain master browser?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nDNS resolution<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nRequires a server, which could be your internet router.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nThe server can be set to allow workstations to register their name at\nstartup<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nUsually DNS requires a \u201cFully qualified\u201d name consisting of\npc.domain  ie www.google.com<\/a> but\nthe domain suffixes setting allows bare names to have a suffix\/domain\nname automatically added \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nDnsLint utility does same basic analysis and checks for Split Brian. \nIt creates an html report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
